The recession that hit Ireland in recent times can be traced to deep emotional processes where trust had disappeared, where there was little room for individuality, where performance was prized above well-being and where there was an overwhelming push for ‘success’ at all costs.”—Relationship, Relationship, Relationship: The Heart of a Mature Society (ISBN 978 185594 216 5, sbk, 186 pp, 198 x 129mm, €14.95/£13.50).
It was not the financial institutions that played recklessly with people’s money; it was not the financial institutions that were greedy and avaricious. It was individuals, particularly those at the top levels of management. It is worrying that there is still no evidence that these individuals have examined their actions and the consequences of their actions.
Trust is the foundation of any strong and efficient financial system. Behaving ethically involves seeing beyond ourselves so that others in relationship with us – for example, shareholders, customers or employees – can be confident that we have their goodwill in mind and in heart. It will take considerable time to rebuild the ethos of trust that has been lost. Setting ethical guidelines will not be enough for this; only a focus on personal maturity will make this happen.
The book is especially aimed at those adults in our society who have leadership, managerial and parental responsibilities. While aimed at both men and women, the book seeks in particular to draw in men who traditionally have not seen relationship as belonging to their sphere of business; the book emphasises that for the sake of mature society this is an area that men can no longer afford to avoid.
Relationship, Relationship, Relationship: The Heart of a Mature Society will be launched on July 6th at the West Cork Literary Festival in Bantry by Alan Crosbie who is Chairman of Thomas Crosbie Holdings Ltd and is a fifth-generation family business owner.
