His mother died when he was seven years old. His early relationship with his father, also called Bob, a travelling salesman, was turbulent but they are now said to be close.

Educated at Dublin’s Blackrock College but quit school as a teenager to work in a meat factory in Tallaght, Dublin.

Later formed the band Nightlife Thugs which became the Boomtown Rats. In 1979 the band topped the charts in Britain with Rat Trap.

Inspired by Michael Buerk’s reportage of the 1984 Ethiopian famine Geldof decided to change how the developed world related with Africa.

He put together Band Aid whose single Do they Know It’s Christmas? sold over three million copies and is one of the most widely recognised songs of all time.
